It may be useful to have some or all of these different types of mentoring relationships at various times in your career. Dana’s first experience with mentoring, though she didn’t identify it as a form of “mentoring” at the time, was learning from a model mentor. Early in her career, she felt that she wasn’t communicating effectively and noticed that one of her clients did a wonderful job in this area—when Mary Jane spoke, everyone listened. Dana was curious to find out what Mary Jane was doing to achieve this winning style. So, when she could, she sat in meetings Mary Jane was leading, watched her closely, and took notes on style, language, cadence—even the structure of her communication. Dana practiced using some of Mary Jane’s techniques in speeches and meetings she ran. Her client never knew it, but Dana learned a great deal from her and now prides herself in her strong communication skills.
Becky realized she had an invisible mentor, an executive vice president of her company, when she was invited to his home—and it came as an eye-opener. He had interviewed her at the time she was hired as director of product development but she rarely saw him. When she walked into his holiday party, she couldn’t help but notice that she was the only person there at her level (vice president)—all the others were higher level executives and people she considered personal friends of the host. She was both surprised and flattered. She thought back to when she was unexpectedly put on a strategic committee he ran and, another time, when he suggested she get to know the operations director he had just hired. When she put these pieces together, she realized that he had been supporting her behind the scenes and, in essence, helping others to know and value her. Though she had not directly approached him for advice, thinking he was too important to bother, he had been keeping an eye on her career—to her advantage.
